Lesson 9 William Wegman: Surrealism and Variety

The Artis William Wegman is an artist that I have seen many times in my life but never heard of. His images of Wiemaraners dressed as humans are common place in our world. Wegman's work is far more than the photos he is most know for. There are many books, videos, and paintings that complete his repertoire. His work plays with the concept of surrealism and the relationships of dogs and humans. This work is both though provoking and fun. The layers to Wegman's works contrasts him from many modern artists of the time. His works are more about the contrast and our relationships with dogs than a political or sexual comment. These works are made for more because of this. In an article with Artsy he talks about his experiences as an artist. I would highly encourage reading this article because of how I was able to get a sense of who he is as a person. He honestly feels like someone that my dad would be friends with. He is constantly experimenting with his art. Though his dogs are what he is famous for he is constantly making changing what art he is creating. This constant evolution of his art is something I understand as a creative because I am constantly changing between different forms of artistic expression. I cross stitch, sew, write, use watercolors, and do some very amateur photography. These different avenues of expression help me to better understand my feelings and ideas at the time. Wegman's work has something for everyone, especially the dog lovers.
