Lesson 7 Emotional Attachment: How we mourn the dead

Animals are a part of our lives, when we include anything living in our lives there is the inevitable part of our lives, death. There are many people that have dealt with the death of a pet. There are records of people mourning the death of their pets. These records are mainly in the form of poems. Many of these poems have a quite different than what one may think as a mourning poem. Many of them are more commical poems. Though many mourn in different ways these early records seemed to be more of moral example than true mourning. This comical morality is connected with the sexist ideas. This is mainly because of the  stereotype of women getting "too" attached to their pets and mourning the death of their pets. This can be if they mourn too little or not "genuinely" enough.

So, here's my spicy take, this is silly. In my life there I have lost many people and a dog that were meaningful to me. As I have mourned that they died I have mourned differently. This is why this judgement is silly to me. If you judge someone on how they react to a relationship in retrospect you will have a King Lear situation. People all deal with grief differently. There are many people who are quiet and inward with their grief. This many be seen as a person that doesn't mourn enough, but they are quietly building them selves back up. This is one of the ways that I experience grief. The animal shock of death is extremely painful but after that point I work to rebuild myself. I work to do this because I see the rebuilding and betterment of myself as a way to honor the memories of those who've past.

A humorous poem is fine, ever a quiet revelry for the dead but comparison and a "holier than thou" idea is never the right way to mourn, especially for a pet. Dogs are our companions they love us unconditionally. We should learn from their example and be loving no mater what we may think of another, human or not. This kind of love makes us better, and we owe it to the memory of our amazing pets to share the love they gave us.
